Everyday Triggers of Migraine
Everyone experiences occasional headaches, but for those who suffer from migraines, these headaches can be frequent, and debilitating. The exact cause of migraines is unknown, but it appears that they are triggered by a combination of factors. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, migraines may be triggered by changes in levels of certain chemicals in the brain. These triggers can be anything from changes in weather to odors or even the routine day-to-day activities we engage in, such as reading or talking on the phone. To better understand what triggers migraines and how you can prevent them, it’s important to understand the different types of migraines and their common everyday triggers. Read on to learn more about each type and how you can reduce your risk of getting them.
What are the Most Common Causes of Migraines?
The cause of migraine is unknown. It may be caused by a change in brain chemicals resulting in a temporarily reduced blood flow to the brain. The most common type of migraine headache is the classic migraine. This type of migraine headache is not related to any particular trigger, but rather a spontaneous occurrence. The pain typically starts in the forehead and slowly spreads out to other parts of the head, neck, and even the rest of the body. Other forms of migraine headaches are those that are caused by changes in levels of chemicals in the brain. These types of migraines can be triggered by anything from changes in weather to odors or even the routine day-to-day activities we engage in, such as reading or talking on the phone.
What is the Prevalence of Migraine?
Migraine is a debilitating neurological disorder that affects more than one in every 12 people. The prevalence of migraine is estimated to be between 15-20 percent, but this number may not accurately reflect the true rate. Researchers estimate that one in every 12 people will develop a migraine disorder at some point in their lives. According to the American Migraine Foundation, 10 million Americans suffer from migraines 1 in every 12 people will develop a migraine disorder at some point in their life. Women are known to experience twice as likely to suffer from either type of migraine than men. A family history of migraine and intense emotional events such as arguments or trauma have been linked to migraines.
Ice Packs and Cold Compress for Relief
Migraines can be debilitating and whether you have an aura or not, they are a real pain. A number of triggers have been found to cause migraine attacks such as dehydration, fasting, hormonal changes, stress and poor sleep. If you’re experiencing a migraine attack, it’s important to know what to do. One of the most effective ways of relieving your pain is to apply ice packs or cold compresses. This will decrease your headache intensity and the duration of the attack. Ice packs are best if they are in the freezer and placed directly on your forehead. Cold compresses should be soaked with cold water and then applied to your forehead for 10-15 minutes every half hour during an attack.
